  1. This is wild and weird and I love every second of it.

  2. Proof that serious musicians don't have to act serious. Their entire catalog of music is so experimental and playful (and referential), you can tell they truly love listening to and making music. I feel like most musicians and groups who are still making new and innovative music after 40 years, just consistently turning out banger albums every few years when they could easily tour on their classics or retire on residuals, those are people who truly love making music.

  3. This is one of my fave songs to sing to on my playlist

  4. That whole album, "Flood" by They Might Be Giants, is excellent. One of my favorite albums. I had no idea the music was doing all of this. It just sounds great.

  5. If you studied European harmony it will make more sense.

  6. I like They Might Be Giants but they remind me of a bad part in my life now and they're sometimes hard to listen to now. I hope this video gives me a better connotation

  7. An excellent song, about a light bulb!!!

  8. They might be giants are so unique. Awesome stuff.

  9. They Might Be Giants authored one of the catchiest, creepy tunes ever: Older. I send it out for birthdays!😄

  10. I was in Jr High when this came out. And I was just coming into my own musical tastes, and beginning to look into music history. (Of note, having already changed from violin to percussion)
    These guys BLEW MY MIND!!
    Thank you for this.

  11. I've loved this song for decades! I recognised them right away when my daughter started watching Mickey Mouse Club. Even with no musical knowledge at all (I can't even read music), I had such a great time watching this video. Thank you 😊

  12. Why'd they change keys I can't say.

Guess they liked it better that way!

  13. As someone with a degree in music, I wish this was my Form and Analysis project rather than Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony

  14. I'm not musically inclined. None of this made a lick of sense. But I stayed for the lovely green flashing keys.

  15. I have loved this song for thirty years and never noticed how much it does musically in such a short span of time! I can’t tell you how much I love this breakdown from such a knowledgeable source!

  16. Not bad for a song about a child's bedroom night light, eh?

  17. I absolutely love this! I’d like to see and hear your analysis of XTC’s song “Ballet For A Rainy Day.”

  18. When this came out none of my friends liked it 🙁 I bought the 7" and still play it to this day. Amazing tune.

  19. This album was the best.

  20. I am so glad that you gave TMBG some love. They've been one of my favorites for years. If you want another classic TMBG song to check out I highly recommend their cover of "Istanbul Not Constantinople"

  21. There is something anthemic and almost religious about that song. I love it.

  22. 1989 also had Manchild by Neneh Cherry

  23. I just wanted to mention that Tiny Toon Adventures animated two songs by TBMG.. Very clever quirky band I've always loved this song and had no idea how odd the notation would look

  24. Calling TMBG pop is just wacky. Is it really key changes man? Or is it people playing outside the rules you're used to living by? It's like the theory guys trying to break down "What Dean Ween is doing" on a song like Transdermal Celebration… diatonic triads interval whatevers man. Theory is great but that Deaner did was likely a line or two and smashed out the feel. Are there 18 key changes or did he just use chords they thought were interesting and make melodies etc that fit them? I'm going with that. TMBG didn't do any of the things you're talking about. Trying to translate it back to the theory is just weird. They were just doing things that sounded cool. Maybe it maps to the theory but I wish you'd just acknowledge that theory is limited in creating music and the reason you're mind is so blown is cuz they didn't use it.

  25. Thomas the Tank Engine just made beer come out of my nose, and I wasn't even drinking a beer.

  26. Just wait 'til you start analyzing the lyrics. Great job, love your work!

  27. Always been a firm favourite of mine.
    Great mood raiser

  28. One of the best pop songs ever!

  29. Expect nothing less from the twin quasars of rock.

  30. Yugioh season 0 abridged theme song

  31. Dude! Look into "Sun on the Moon" by James Taylor! It's so weird and so fun!

  32. Hooray for the musical wizards of Williamsburg!

  33. JL in thumbnail well you’ve got my attention 😌

  34. This is my favorite song from a truly amazing, underrated album.

  35. What’s funny is that at the time this album came out, fans like myself considered it their “normal album”

  36. the whole song is in Bb. why is this guy trying to put ot all in C natural, just because that's the tonic?

  37. I’ve been obsessed with this song since it came out. It felt both unique and like a classic immediately.

  38. I can recommend two other songs of theirs you might like: Mrs.Bluebeard and Renew My Subscription

  39. One of my all time favorite songs. Just one of the most beautiful creations ever, seriously. Thanks for the deep dive!

  40. This song was part of my acoustic show for about 25 years. I love songs with odd or changing time signatures. This song has it all. I am glad someone recommended TMBG to you. I recommend you check out a song called "I've Got Some Falling to Do" by Lemon Demon. Might not be worth making a video on, but definitely worth the listen.
